Because dogs are more sensitive to other signs besides oral communication, they have developed a connection between touching and closeness to emotional happiness, and petting your dog does a lot more than just show attention. It actually speaks to them.

You will notice that if you let your dog get on your lap, or sit next to you they may smash themselves in to you as you are petting them. This is a natural thing and it means that you are doing a good job.

There is a difference between petting your dog and giving them a reward for good behavior, and you shouldn’t confuse the two. You can and should pet your dog frequently, and for no reason at all. Remember this when you come home and say hi.

You need to walk your dog. This shows them that you are in a pack, a group, a network. You’re cruising the neighborhood with your pal, and they need this from you. Additionally, it is good exercise, and both of you can benefit from doing this on a regular basis.

Give your dog a surprise treat from time to time. There doesn’t need to be a reason, just do it. You can give them a doggie treat, and they love those. But, you can also do something nice like take them to hang out with other dogs every now and then.
